The obsession with showing off our shoulders doesn’t seem to be quite over yet as designers continue to share their version of the off-the-shoulder (OTS) dress, from the traditional elastic band to shoulder cut outs and what Elle calls “The X Factor.” And with temperatures on the rise, it can only mean more opportunities for us to bare our clavicle, arguably one of the most alluring parts of a woman’s body.
Dresses come in all shapes and styles, as shown on the international retailer Lyst, from minis to maxis, to flatter every body type. But, there’s something about the OTS silhouette that redefines sexy without revealing too much, so if you haven’t got a shoulder-baring dress or two in your closet, it’s about time that you went out and bought one.
The off-the-shoulder look isn’t one of the easiest to pull off, so we’ve provided a few suggestions below to ensure you look your best while trying out this trend:
Be minimal when it comes to jewelry
With such an interesting neckline, you don’t necessarily need any statement necklaces to jazz up your outfit (although feel free to wear statement pieces on your hands or wrists!). Fashionsy recommends thin necklaces, which look great as a single necklace as well as layered pieces.
Your hair should look just as effortless as your dress
There’s something quite down-to-earth with the cold shoulder trend, and while a sleek ballerina bun might be your go-to hairstyle, anything OTS looks better with beachy waves. As an alternative, you can also do a messy ponytail or bun to draw attention to your shoulders, but if you want to keep your hair down, try the waterfall braid.
Keep it simple
The best piece of advice that you can take away from this is that less is more. The easygoing element of the OTS dress lets you dial back on too much accessorizing or heavy makeup. As Your Next Shoes explains, when showing off your collarbone, you’re also highlighting your face, so dramatic makeup or a headband with lots of embellishments will throw off the fluidity of your outfit.
