Where: Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom, Orlando, Florida
Why: You’ll do a double take once you walk into Skipper Canteen because the theming, based on the nearby Jungle Cruise attraction, is brilliant and executed in a more upscale manner than your traditional theme-park eatery. Discover secret rooms to dine in with cuisine inspired by the journeys of the Jungle Boat Skippers from Asia, South America and Africa—all worth trying. With so much to see at every turn and cast members (wait staff) who stay in character as skippers from the Jungle Cruise ride, it’s a complete experience for the whole family. And did we say that the food is surprisingly good? It’s a wonderful escape from burgers and hot dogs.
Must-haves: Even though it’s simply breaded chicken (and the most familiar to most), the “Tastes like Chicken” Because it is! item is delicious with a capital “D”! Crispy breading and paired with a chili glaze sauce and jasmine rice, you won’t be disappointed. The “A Lot at Steak” Salad is a huge portion so you may want to share if you’re a light eater. The “Hardy Har Char” Siu Pork is also very flavorful. For drinks, we had the non-alcoholic Schweitzer Slush which was perfect for a very hot day. It’s made from frozen apple juice and passion fruit and topped with bursting green apple boba balls, it’s a lot of tasty fun with each sip. And if you’re really hungry, kick off your meal with some S.E.A. Shu Mai.
There was so much food that we didn’t even have room for dessert. But we’ll try some next time since we’ll definitely be back at this hidden gem in Adventureland.
