Designer: Phoebe English
Presentation Venue: The Royal College of Surgeons, London
The Collection: It was a beautiful Sunday morning in London that accompanied me during my walk to see the SS16 collection of Phoebe English — one of the latest generations of British designers who is bridging the terms “promise” to “reality”.
The selected place for her presentation was the iconic Royal College of Surgeons. In my mind, the selection of this building represented something more than its majestic architecture; the term “surgeon” describes the soul of Phoebe’s work — her will to emphasize the tasks and processes behind the construction of her pieces. The work itself, the final aesthetic result.
The audience for this particular event included the presence of some of the the main personalities in Fashion Industry such as Suzy Menkes and Dylan Jones. Needless to say, for someone like me who is learning every day, this event was going to be like a masterclass in Fashion. I needed to have all my senses and attention focused on all details of the show.
The setup of the room helped to create an atmosphere full of intimacy between the public and the collection. Two large mirrors on each end of the room helped to capture all details of the pieces as each model stood in place — allowing for almost a 360 view of each creation.
Phoebe plays with complexity and simplicity; behind a simple silhouette is an amazing treasure of hard work, a structured armor of crêpes, linen and wool covered the bodies of the models to present the modern woman as personified by Phoebe English. Multiple strings adorned the bodies, turning the oversize into something soft and sexy.
This sartorial presentation evoked the spirit of a skilled surgeon in action — a master showing the majesty of their talent.
