This has pushed the entire fashion industry to rethink its approach to these materials. Needless to say, this change requires a huge effort from all maisons.
But, one of the great things when they decide to adopt a more sustainable processes, is the fact they can discover new and interesting niches which could be even more interesting than the ones they used to cover in the past.
During Paris Fashion Week, I visited Yves Salomon, an iconic brand known as the couturier of leather. During the past two seasons, Yves Salomon has dedicated a special exhibition based on the new, sustainable needs of the market.
The brand knows how exceptional their main raw materials are, so they decided to take this luxury advantage and push the boundaries to justify production. What they have also discovered is how this value has helped to boost creativity in all their processes and designs. This change, which has also revolutionized the internal culture of the maison, has been reinforced in the engagement of all teams and customers.
This ethical value brings a beautiful and timeless Spring/Summer 2019 collection, a collection where all fabrics, leather and shearlings, come from unused and unsold pieces from the House. It is incredible how a strip of leather can revive and improve the design and the fit of a blouse, midi skirt or long coat. The combination of colors, fabrics and types of leathers that Yves Salomon has created, has provided an unusual result—one very chic and easy to admire.
