While it was sweltering and muggy in the streets of NYC, the venue for the Nick Graham SS18 collection was refreshing, with cool breezes blowing in my face while I watched ocean waves roll onto tropical beaches on a digital wall. The mood had been set for the “Atlantis” collection where the ocean would play a big part.
After the lights dimmed, a parade of dapper, yet shoeless models, strolled onto the runway dressed in lighter weight suits painted in an array of vibrant colors and ocean inspired tones, with pants rolled up calf-high. The suits were paired with a range of buttoned-down patterned shirts, vests, tees and accented with corded belts (which appear to be a mainstay) and accessorized with whimsical ocean creatures pinned onto the shoulders. A model in a green suit was even accessorized with a seaweed boa and had seaweed strands cascading through his hair. There was also a nod to pirates, giving the show another light, joyful touch. I even appreciated that the models smiled as they walked the runway versus the emotionless stares often seen on runways around the globe.
The combination of bold colors, playful attitude of the models and the whimsical styling made for one refreshing event. And just when you thought it was over after the runway finale, two male models in swimsuits topped off with floral swim caps, came down the runway with mops to clean up. The models then each took their place atop individual boxes lining the runway, allowing for all to closely inspect and admire each look. I loved the idea of having a runway and presentation format — the best of both worlds!
Nick Graham and his entire team did an outstanding job bringing the theme of “Atlantis” to life and I can’t wait for the collection to wash ashore for next spring/summer.
