As my eyes adjusted, I could have sworn that the runway had water rippling across it. As the lights illuminated the runway and the first model walked out, my eyes did not deceive as there was water flanking the length of the entire runway. There were also figures close to one end of the runway hunched over as a grouping of painted, futuristic looking beings. The stage and the mood had been set, but what was to come?
For this Autumn/Winter 2019 season, the setting was dark and bleak, almost filled with despair. But amidst the dark theatrics, a collection of architecturally modern streetwear with punches of seasonal color emerged onto the runway. And what caught our eye was the use of die-cutting to give the pieces precision and an added layer of additional interest.
The collection consisted of nylons reflectively piped; jerseys and fleeces that were vegetal-dyed; compasses that were hiding within garments; badges were hand-sewn; raised-rubber logo plaques doubled as fasteners on trousers to alter the fit. The collection also marked the debut denim collaboration with Diesel and showcased new reiterations of A-Cold-Wall x Nike.
Outerwear was also a key to the collection, representing codes of strength, heroic utility and protective cocooning. Puffa jackets weren’t just puffed-up — they were sculpturally molded from memory nylon to ergonomically echo the curvature of the body. Finally, cut-outs on structured wool jackets created a sense of three-dimensional depth.
