With over 25 looks and 14 models, these girls would be the highlight on the runway, with the team’s aim to ensure the models set the story.
Backstage, with its buzzy atmosphere, is where all the mayhem takes place. Picture designer Ryan Lo going over fine details with the stylists as he would re-adjust bows and have discussions with the dressers who were responsible for ensuring that models were dressed correctly and in their line-up position. Orderly lines of rails, paired with shoes neatly displayed, had added touches of model boards that featured the model’s name, portrait image, order number for the runway, full length image of the look, and both side views followed by details of the shoes, hats or bags. With the back-of-house being extremely small as a dresser, you’re expected to prepare your model for the practice walk and main runway show in such tight quarters, so ensuring you introduce yourself to your model makes life easier for both parties involved, especially if she has a second look.
For Spring/Summer 2019, Ryan Lo opened his runway show on a pink runway to the thrills of ruffled, floral prints that bloomed into water colours and layered over a light pink turtle neck, red snakeskin boots and a red Flora witchy hat. The model held on to her prized accessory, her Kiki’s Delivery Service broomstick.
With hair styled by Sam McKnight, who brought back a touch of the sixties with that heavy bleached frayed cut bob, the models had painted red lips and nails. Styling consisted of sleeves puffed out and buttons laid to form a delicate line down the front; there were tulle dresses in pink and black accompanied by ostrich leaved skirts; there was also an oversized crochet jumper tied with ribbons, jacquards and cold shoulder floral print dresses styled with red polka dotted jackets.
One standout accessory was this season’s witchy hat, designed with pointed tips and long trail of fabric, or tulle beehive hats adjusted with pink or black thick ribbon created by hat milliner Stephen Jones. The other added highlighted accessory were Kiki’s love delivery service broomsticks which I noted were sprayed dried flowers. The Spring/Summer 2019 bags were designed in the shapes of a pumpkin and they carried the hopes and dreams of the bearer. Finally, the Dorothy-inspired socks and heels from shoe designer Gina, consisted of embellished heels and boots in red, silver and black with crystal bands and textures from suede and snakeskin.
Brilliant insight – love this
