The Subversion of Matty Bovan. A Mindful State of Style
Cinema director Derek Jarman stated “I’ve never believed in reality,” and this sentence clicked in Matty Bovan’s mind. He agrees with Jarman. But what can a fasion desginer do in order to improve our reality? This has been pushing Bovan in his creativity. “Our lives deserve a parallel universe, bathed with the strength of imagination. A universe where all and each of us can be ourselves”.
In a society where it seems as if everyone is posing and providing a fake impression, Bovan believes that truth and honesty are the slap against things and the social trends that are constraining our lives. This aim in breaking the reality, so as to embrace our true souls, has pushed Matty Bovan to enjoy the intricate, hard work of craftmanship and creating beauty. And in a mere three months, Bovan worked to create a dramatic collection, focussed on finding what he really loves and hates.
For his Spring/Summer 2019 collection, we find a convergence of flowers and bugs to create an explosion of free creativity. We find hand-crocheted flowers by Chris Norrington, recycled multi-coloured plastic cable-ties, and as Casc8 knows, together, this has allowed Bovan to achieve sustainability. The result according to Bovan is the “richest work that I’ve ever done while still testing the limits of taste”.
I believe this is the new Haute Couture. I know this is not the proper use of this term, but, the intricate work behind Matty Bovan’s collection deserves special recognition. There are a lot of hours invested and it is all expertly handmade. While there is no classical emboidrery, this digital era deserves a digital emboidrery, like the one born from the collaboration with Bovan and Jack Puzey. While the materials and fabrics are not the same, this does not mean they are not rich, but the spirit and the way it has been produced, deserves to have the same relevance as couture. Things need to evolve, and couture is evolving.
Many known brands are taking notice of Bovan and his creativity. COACH is one such Brand and has taken action by collaborating with Bovan–the result, all the rare bags we fell in love with during the catwalk. And for the modern Cinderella, shoes must be unique as created by Gina Shoes. The final touches completing the look were provided by the jewellery of Plum Bovan and the millinery knowledge of Sthephen Jones.
