The inspiration for the Issey Miyake SS21 collection presented at Paris Fashion Week came from the act of shipping the prior collection to Paris and the realization of the number of containers used for shipping purposes. The challenge was how do you make the next collection as compact as possible.
The result is a vibrant, always colorful and energetic collection filled with tying, rolling, folding, stacking and layering — a literal unpacking of compact clothing and witnessing the transformation into wearable clothing and in some cases, wearable art.
The collection is broken up into mini collections:
- Form Body: vests that conform to the body
- Out a Piece: zippers that combine garments into a complete look
- To Go: the integration of clothing and a garment bag; transform one into the other
- Spongy: stretchable, compact knit series
- Temporary Room: inspired by the idea of wearing a painting
