I thought for a moment and wondered “why did our follower feel this way”? At COQUE Millinery, we believe that hats are an expression of personal style and preference, and there are no classifications for who should wear a certain style of hat.
With Fall just around the corner, we hope that we can inspire you to join the “hat movement”. Try something new this season and give your hats a personal “twist” by wearing them in a non-traditional way. Following are tips and illustrations that we hope you will find helpful.
[x_custom_headline type=”center” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h4″ accent=”true”]1920s Cloche[/x_custom_headline]
The cloche from the French meaning “bell”, has a deep crown and thin brim. Traditionally worn tilted down over the eyes, for a mysterious look. Twist: Not feeling mysterious? Try turning one side of the brim upwards. Add a decorative broach or flower pin for a feminine touch.
[x_custom_headline type=”center” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h4″ accent=”true”]1960s Pillbox Hat[/x_custom_headline]
The pillbox hat was made popular by “Jackie O” Jackie Kennedy Onassis, in the 1960s. This vintage style boasts a flat top, upright sides and is brimless. Traditionally worn on the crown of the head or towards the back of the head. Twist: Try tilting the pillbox towards the front of the head. Adjust the veiling over the eyes for a sultry look. Not a fan of veiling? Simply tuck the veiling under the hat.
[x_custom_headline type=”center” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h4″ accent=”true”]”Slanted” Beret[/x_custom_headline]
The beret style hats have become very popular following Kate Middleton’s many appearances in a beautiful array of these hats. Many hat block makers have named their blocks “Kate” to commemorate the look. Usually worn tilted towards one side of the head, to mimic the classic French beret. Twist: Try wearing the slanted point of the beret, slightly towards the front of the face, for a “cap” like appearance.
[x_custom_headline type=”center” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h4″ accent=”true”]Helpful Tips[/x_custom_headline]
- Occasion: If you’re attending a theatrical event, be mindful of how big your hat is, to avoid blocking someone’s view. For events like the Kentucky Derby races, the sky is the limit – the more extravagant the hat, the better!
- Outfit: Want to give your feminine dress an edgier look? Try wearing a fedora hat. The straight lines of the hat will contrast nicely with the fluidity of your dress. Add a leather moto jacket to the mix, and your look will be completely transformed.
- Colour: Choose colours for the season that are complementary to your skin tone. If you want to add a pop of colour to your overall look, a hat is an easy and effective way to do it, without a full commitment.
- Hair: Your hairstyle can have a huge impact on the style of hat that you choose to wear. One of our favourite looks is side swept hair, with a cloche or fedora hat.
[x_custom_headline type=”center” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h4″ accent=”true”]The Right Hat for You?[/x_custom_headline]
Here are a few tips to consider, when looking for a hat to complement your face shape:
Rectangular: Hats with wide brims like the floppy hat, create a soft and fluid shape to complement the lines of your face.
Square: Think round and curvy shapes. Try hats with rounded edges and tall rounded crowns like the cloche.
Round: Try a fedora or bowler hat worn on top of the head, which will match well with the circular features of your cheekbones.
Heart: Look for medium sized brimmed hats, hatinators and fascinations that flow gently over the eyes.
Oval: Experiment with a variety of looks like berets, upturned brimmed hats and pillboxes.
Finally, we believe that you should wear any style of hat that makes you feel great. We hope that we’ve “hatspired” you to try something new this Fall season. Remember to have fun and give your hats a “twist”!
