Catch up on Day 1 D23 Expo Highlights.
Day 2 of D23 Expo 2019 turned the spotlight onto Disney’s upcoming and highly anticipated slew of live action and animated films. Studio heads and filmmakers from Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Disney Live Action, Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios shared new details and introduced the films’ stars. There was also a beautiful performance from “Frozen 2” by voice cast members Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad.
2019
- “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” starring Angelina Jolie opens in U.S. theaters on Oct. 18, 2019.
- “Frozen 2” opens in U.S. theaters on November 22, 2019. Two new cast members were introduced during the event: Sterling K. Brown, who voices Lieutenant Destin Mattias, and Evan Rachel Wood, who voices Queen Iduna, Anna and Elsa’s mother.
- “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” opens in U.S. theaters on December 20, 2019.
2020
- “Onward” starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt opens in U.S. theaters on March 6, 2020
- “Mulan” opens in U.S. theaters on March 27, 2020.
- “Black Widow” opens in U.S. theaters on May 1, 2020.
- Pixar’s “Soul” stars the voices of Ahmir Questlove Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, Tina Fey and Jamie Foxx. The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 19, 2020.
- “Jungle Cruise” starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson will open in U.S. theaters on July 24, 2020.
- “The Eternals” will star Richard Madden as Ikaris; Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo; Lauren Ridloff as Makkari; Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos; Salma Hayek as Ajak; Lia McHugh as Sprite; Don Lee as Gilgamesh; and Angelina Jolie as Thena. Also joining the cast are Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, and Barry Keoghan as Druig. Chloé Zhao will direct the film and it opens in U.S. theaters on November 6, 2020.
- “Raya and the Last Dragon,” by directors Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins, stars Awkwafina as the voice of Sisu, the Last Dragon, who was left on Earth in case dark forces return to the world, and Cassie Steele is the voice of the lead character, Raya. The film opens in U.S. theaters on November 25, 2020.

- “Cruella,” an all-new feature film starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson opens in the U.S. on May 28, 2021
2022
- “Black Panther 2” (working title) opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2022.
