The Spring/Summer 2021 Official Rebrand collection presented at NYMD during New York Fashion Week was inspired by designer MI Leggett’s reflections “on what it means to be a gender variant person existing within an institution that both wants more progressive gender politics and aesthetics, but simultaneously is still structurally and socially grounded in the binary.” This is in addition to a focus on anti-waste urgency and social unrest from the past through today. An earthy color palette accentuated with magenta and blue are overlaid onto shirts, trousers and jackets with a retro nod. Oversized lapels, exaggerated shoulders and slightly flared pants are additional touches which harken back to yesteryear to exude modern coolness and confidence.

As a result of discovering the central role pottery has played in Trypillian society, Bevza also showcases the beauty of handmade jewelry created by ceramicist Nadiia Shapoval – all of which is captured in the digital film unveiled during New York Fashion Week, this September 2020.
“I wanted to show how important it is to find our roots and make it interesting. This pandemic separated us with other nations and cultures,” said designer Svitlana Bevza. “We can communicate our customs to each other by telling a story of our own land.”
The resulting collection continues in the minimalistic and clean style we’ve come to expect in the Bevza brand. But even with an understated color palette of white, cream, mauve and black, there is an underlying dimensionality in the details and hints of architectural references in various looks. The addition of knitwear in the collection also adds another layer of texture to this already beautiful collection born from a rich Ukrainian history.

San Diego born surfer and model Tristan Detwiler made his debut at NYMD with this SS21 collection inspired by the SoCal coastal lifestyle.
“I learned the story of an antique quilt while in my final semester. It had been sitting collecting dust for 30 plus years. Originally handmade by this grandmother in 1880, it had been passed down for 140 years, touching each family member so closely. While holding this piece, I felt I had the obligation to revive what was ingrained in each stitch of this textile. Each name signed upon this blanket, each piece of wool from different family members’ wool suits, and each makeshift mend throughout the years, called for attention, and I knew I was the conduit,” said Tristan.
