“Mycelium has the most profound, interconnecting power, relaying messages through a magical underground structure, allowing trees to reach out to each other when either they or their young need help or are sick. The idea is humbling – beautiful – and, of course, a metaphor for interconnection and for community between people, between us all. We exist as single, individual entities on one level, but we are far more powerful connected to each other, to our families, to our friends, to our community. Given everything that has happened over the past two years, that seems more important than ever. As a community we are infinitely more able to restore, reinvent, rejuvenate – heal.”
Sarah Burton, Creative Director
A McQueen runway in NYC hasn’t occurred since 1999. Sarah Burton made a triumphant return with a runway event filled with a 41-look collection set against an industrial warehouse of steel and concrete contrasted with mounds of earthy mulch. The FW22 collection ranged from modern tailoring, seductive leather dresses, a punk attitude, asymmetric cuts, masculine shoulders and a mushroom motif. Grounded in classic black, the color palette was punctuated with bright yellow and green, to red and orange hues. The incorporation of mohair added an organic element and soft movement to the collection while a dramatic black dress in fishnet tulle with crystal mycelium embroidery was simply sublime.
