It’s about showcasing a collection and bringing a memorable and positive experience to the audience. Brands at Paris Fashion Week execute this extremely well and combined with the city’s unique magic, it is difficult to duplicate it anywhere else.
For Chanel, one of the biggest brands, it consistently produces events on the scale of a Hollywood event. I am thinking about renaming le Grand Palais as the “Lagerfeld Studios”. Each season, the emblematic building has been transformed into incredible scenarios, such as a bucolic forest, a jungle, a paradise of waterfalls, a futuristic platform to visit the moon…
For this season of Paris Fashion Week, the Kaiser has exceeded all expectations in the transformation of le Grand Palais. The motto “nothing is imposible” seems to be tattooed in the DNA of the maison.
Karl Lagerfeld wanted his Spring/Summer 2019 collection to show an idyllic partnership between a woman and the joy of summer. So, voilà! Le Grand Palais became a beach paradise with real sand and water. And not surprisingly, there was also a blue sky above everyone’s heads.
The colors of the Chanel collection were aligned with the lighting of the “Grand Palais Beach Club” — vibrant yellow, pink, ice mint, golden sand, light blue, and of course, the iconic Chanel navy and black.
The freedom and joy associated with summer were translated into wide and oversized pieces. The iconic tweed jackets gained volume, allowing one to move without feeling constrained. There were also flared sleeves, skirts slit up the side and openings over mini-skirts, and unzipped, oversize trousers. Jumpsuits with XL legs contrasted sharply with outfits of short jackets and little tweed dresses. Men’s jackets were coupled with strapless cycling shorts or leggings. Jeans were paired with belted cardigans or swimwear with asymmetric shoulders.
I can’t forget to mention all the perfect accessories Chanel paired with each look—driving our desire for the bags, jewelry, hats and even makeup and styling. Everything combined, it was a runway reflecting a natural, healthy sophistication.
