It can be a hard path to follow but, at least they know where they want to go. To become a fashion designer requires a lot of passion and determination. And when one is an independent, small designer, the amount of passion and hard work required is even greater.
Launching a collection and bringing it to the market is difficult, especially when resources are scarce. One turns to creativity, imagination and the use of social media to offset the scarcity of funds; networking become critical. And of course, the fashion creations need to breath quality and exude a distinctive personality. Finally, one needs to find a way to get the designs into the hands of potential clients. This is the uphill battle a fashion designer faces.
For Barcelona-based fashion designer Lucía Rodríguez and her brand Sueños de Lucía, “Lucía’s Dreams”, the summer season is full of opportunities for her fashion line. Lucía has a unique sense of femininity and it shows in her fabric selections. She cannot work without creating something special and of great quality. What I love about her designs is that it doesn’t matter if you are too slim or too curvy — all her creations are perfectly suited for each body type. She creates each piece so exquisitely that we can talk about urban haute couture. Her most popular pieces are the cropped tops and the wonderful bodycon midi dresses with amazing wrap back.

Lucía’s SS15 collection of Sueños de Lucía offers versatility, functionality and feminine elegance. It has the perfect combination for the modern woman. Appropriately named “Espontánea” or “Spontaneous”, its vibrant colors of orange, blue, green and bathing cropped tops, pencil skirts and bodycon dresses are perfect for warm summer days and nights. Her collection is inspired by several art movements from Abstract, Fauvism to Tachism – styles which are beautifully designed into her garments.
Lucía recently held a private fashion show to showcase her latest collection in a unique location in El Born and I was fortunate enough to attend.

If you’re not familiar with El Born, it is a lively neighborhood and full of life 24/7. It is located near the Ramblas, the beach, and close to the Parc de la Ciutadella and the Barcelona Zoo.
The nightlife of El Born is well known, there are plenty of restaurants and bars, but probably the most interesting thing about El Born is that it has plenty of culture. You can walk through the Calle Montcada, a medieval street, which is now home to the Picasso Museum and the Textile Museum which has a lovely café with a terrace attached to it. The Textile Museum is located here because in Born’s early days it was home to the textile guilds of Barcelona. And while here, you have to visit Santa Maria del Mar, with its 14th century Catalan Gothic architecture.
El Born is also a nice place for shopping — lots of independent designers from all around the world have their ateliers and shops there. And you can find luxury boutiques but with unique pieces only sold at El Born, different from the ones you can find for the same brand in other cities.[line]
Going back to our fashion event, Lucía wanted guests to feel at home during the fashion show and so a big table was covered with fantastic international foods: chicken curry, rice, Iberic jam, cheese, foie gras, sushi and amazing homemade tortillas called patatas. And as all good foodies know, Catalonia has fantastic wines. We were fortunate enough to enjoy a fresh variety of Vermejo, a wine with a fantastic taste that fits any meal, by Vino Afortunado, a sponsor at the event.
After the wonderful dinner the showroom opened and the shopping started. Attendees selected their favorite designs and tried them on, all with the personal guidance and advice of Lucía who attended to every one of her guests. At the end, we cheered and toasted to a wonderful evening with exclusive cava by Juvé & Camps.
